Note: Il  Praefectus classis (Classis = flotta) era il comandante in capo di una delle flotte appartenenti all’esercito romano.

Questa carica  fu  inizialmente occupata da coloro che appartenevano all'ordine equestre, o a partire da Claudio, dai suoi liberti, garantendo così il controllo imperiale diretto sopra le varie flotte. Con la dinastia dei Flavi, la condizione di praefectus fu affidata ai soli cavalieri con esperienza militare, che avevano fatto carriera nelle militiae equestri. Anche in questo caso il prefetto, seppure dotato di esperienza militare, era comunque un politico con scarse conoscenze navali, tanto da doversi affidare a dei subordinati.

Notes: The  Praefectus classis (Classis = fleet) was the commander of one of the fleets belonging to the roman army. Initially the position was occupied by equestrian order members or, after Claudio, by his Liberti, affording in this way the control on the Emperor on the fleets. With the Flavi family, the praefectus condition was only assigned to equestrian with military experience (equites). Even in this case the praefectus, even with military experience, was more a politicians than a seaman with no naval skills and had to rely on subaltern officers.
