Questa scena riproduce un preciso momento della campagna di Germania condotta da Germanico, proconsole della Gallia, sotto il regno di Tiberio, quando il Legato Aulo Cecina Severo, intrappolato con le sue legioni

durante l'attraversamento dei cosiddetti Pontes Longi, nelle zone acquitrinose tra il fiume Ems ed il Weser, per poco non venne annientato con il suo esercito in un'imboscata dei Germani condotti dal solito Arminio, già vincitore a Teutoburgo.
Lo scontro durò diversi giorni ed in una fase particolare della battaglia lo stesso Cecina rischiò di cadere se non fosse intervenuta la legio I Germanica, rappresentata nella scena, che assieme alle legioni V Alaudae, XXI Rapax e XX Valeria Victrix costituiva lo schieramento romano.
Alla fine i romani ebbero la meglio, Arminio fuggì laciandosi dietro numerosi caduti e le legioni poterono a far ritorno negli accampamenti sulla riva destra del Reno.

The scene represents the exact moment of the German Campaign lead by Germanico, during the reign of Tiberius. The Legate Aulo Cecina Severo, trapped with his legions while crossing the so-called Pontes Longi, in the marshy area between the rivers Ems and Weser, was nearly destroyed with his army in a ambush by Arminio, the winner of Teutoburg 6 years before.
The fight lasted several days and in a particular moment of the battle Cecina was about to be killed and was saved by the Legio I Germanica, which formed the Roman army together with Legio V Alaudae, XXI Rapax and XX Valeria Victrix.
Eventually the Romans won, Arminio retreated leaving behind as lot of slains and the Roman legions could return to the camps on the right bank of the Rhine.
